Vegetarian Health Benefits

One of the greatest vegetarian health benefits is the fact that it reduces the risk of having heart attacks. Another one of the vegetarian health benefits is that a vegetable and fruit diet helps to prevent many cancers. Many studies have shown that people on vegetarian diets have also had lower rates of gallstones, colon disease, kidney stones, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Those who consume a vegetarian diet are also less likely to be overweight.

Vegetarians may also have lower cholesterol levels and have half the cancer rate than those who have red meats in their diets. Breast cancer has shown up less often in the countries that have high vegetable and fruit consumption and low meat diets. The common health benefits such as a healthy heart, lower blood pressure, and cancer prevention a higher vegetarian diet also helps to control diabetes, it eliminates body toxins, food is much easier to digest and an overall improvement of health.

Vegetables and fruits contain more antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C, phytochemicals and beta-carotenes. Phytochemicals are the components that are available in plants that help in the prevention of many diseases. The antioxidants decrease ones chance of having heart disease, cancer and many other diseases. Vegetarian diets or diets that are very high in fruits and vegetables are just as enjoyable as diets containing red meats. Most of the diets not only contain vegetables and fruits but also herbs that add flavor and aroma. A good idea would be to plant an indoor herb garden to be able to enhance the flavor of our fruits and vegetables all year long.

Eating too much red meat will increase your chances of getting breast cancer, colon cancer, heart disease and strokes. Cardiovascular diseases and cancer have been linked to diets that have high amounts of saturated fat and a low amount of fiber. Many meat products have a high level of sodium which causes water retention in blood and they will also cause plague build-up in arteries lowering blood flow which causes high blood pressure. The grains and plant foods have fiber and most meat products have very little if any at all. Fiber is very important for the body to be able flush itself out; colon cancer can be a main cause of the body not having enough fiber.

Because we Americans eat so much meat we end up with much more protein than is recommended for the body. A large amount of protein can leach calcium from our bones which can cause bone disorders. It is extremely important to have plenty of leafy vegetables high in antioxidants to improve our overall health. It is not only important to have enough leafy vegetables but we also need the fiber, vitamins and antioxidants from the fruit that we have growing in our gardens.

A high vegetarian diet is low in salt and salt is the main cause of hypertension and high blood pressure. High blood pressure can also happen when blood tries to flow faster trying to get through cholesterol build-up in the blood vessels caused from eating too much red meat. In order to maintain a lower blood pressure you will need the potassium that is found in the following fruits and vegetables: apricots, avocados, bananas, bell pepper, broccoli, cabbage, cantaloupe, cauliflower, cucumber, eggplant, lima beans, oranges, papaya, parsley, spinach, strawberries, and tomatoes and many others. Next spring would be a good time to start your own vegetable garden.

Even though there is no cure for diabetes, vegetarian health benefits are more in line for diabetics and more doctors advise their diabetic patients to consume more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to control the disease. These foods are not only high in fiber and complex carbohydrates but are also lower in blood sugar and could possibly eliminate the need for taking medications to control this disease. Daily exercise is also very important not only in controlling diabetes but also for better health.
