The first thing you want to do is to treat all your furniture pieces with a teak protector.
Cleaning teak outdoor furniture is a must whether you want to have the silver-gray look or keep the original honey color. You can use a product that the manufacturer of your patio furniture has recommended or you can use a 2 to 1 ratio of laundry detergent that contains bleach and water and apply it with a soft brush. Next rinse all the pieces of your teak furniture with water to remove all the suds and dirt residue. If you prefer to have your furniture develop that silver gray patina this is all you need to do.
In order to keep the furniture's original honey color you want to seal it with a teak sealant when your pieces have dried after cleaning and rinsing. Most of the teak sealants on the market today contain agents that will prevent the wood developing mold and mildew. A teak oil sealant can be applied to the furniture to keep its original coloring as long as the oil lasts. The oils and sealants protect the furniture from ultraviolet bleaching but will need to be applied every six months to a year to preserve the color.
Oils, varnishes, and water sealers are not necessary for teak wood furniture. The woods natural oils seal out water, and varnishes will flake and chip requiring you to sand the furniture in order to remove it. Ketchup, some drinks, and oily foods can possibly stain
teak wood furniture but a clear coating is available that can be applied to the furniture that will be in close contact with food. Even though teak is resistant to rotting and warping it is not a good idea to let your furniture stand in any water.
Teak is a dense hardwood that is close-grained. It contains high levels of oil that allows the wood to be resistant to any moisture and the effects of dry weather. Teak will not rust or corrode any metals it comes in touch with plus it has the capability of handling the conditions of all the seasons. There is no other wood that compares to teak in regards to elegance, durability, and its low maintenance.
Teak outdoor furniture will weather beautifully and you can leave it untreated in the outdoors without worrying about rotting. It only needs minimal care and does not need to be sealed or treated on a regular basis, only if preferred. After one or possibly two seasons outdoors, your teak furniture will turn a silver-gray; retaining its original color can be obtained by following the teak wood care maintenance above. Teak will remain silver-gray or honey color without ever twisting, rotting, warping, or splintering.
Teak outdoor furniture is knot-free, handsome, smooth, and you will probably never need to replace your
wood outdoor furniture.
