Landscaping in desert climates needs to be carefully planned in order to devise a haven from intense heat during the day and also provide comfort for the chilly nights that are very typical in the desert. There are materials that are energy efficient that can be used to create outdoor living areas that will resist the intense rays of the sun but retain some warmth during the evening hours.

Covered walkways, shaded patios can be constructed of smooth adobe brick, natural cast earth, clay barrel roof tiles, or even thatched straw. Your garden walls that are made of clay or plaster will be able to provide privacy and shade at the same time. Using the right accessories can help to create harmony between your outdoor and indoor space along with comfort and entertainment to your landscape. Desert patio designs will most likely include some type of water feature and shade structure to avoid the heat; fans or other types of devices to circulate the air; a fireplace or heating device for chilly evenings along with other outdoor accessories for sitting and dining.

Desert landscape designs also include xeriscaping which not only makes it easier to garden in dry climates due to the drought tolerance of the plants but it also preserves one of our natural resources by using less water and it still gives us a beautiful garden of native foliage and blooming flowers. Xeriscapes combine a number of native plants that can survive with the small amount of rainwater that they receive and they create a garden full of color and beauty in a desert. Desert landscape designs are generally carried out in very arid climates with some of the lowest levels of yearly rainfall where a xeriscape planting design is the most ideal.
