Outdoor Planter Boxes

Outdoor planter boxes can classified as outdoor window boxes, garden planters, outdoor flower pots, or outdoor containers. Outdoor planter boxes are available in a large variety of styles, sizes and materials such as ceramic, clay, metal, resin, terracotta and wood. Making the right choices of plants and planters for the size and location of a container garden will make all the difference in the world.

There are some advantages to having planter boxes or containers for gardening such as adding color to your deck, patio, entry way, balcony, or any part of your landscape. They can be moved around when needed or replanted if the plants outgrow their space. Sometimes the soil conditions in your yard are not suited to certain plants so using outside planter boxes can solve this problem.

These outdoor planters can be rectangular and made of cedar, teak, vinyl, polyethylene, ceramic, resin, and copper and wrought iron. Some boxes are square, round, or whiskey barrel shaped and are available in many different colors.

It is hard to pass up the natural beauty of wooden planter boxes, even if it is used on a small balcony or large patio area. A planter that is chosen made of durable cedar or long-lasting teak can beautify any garden decor, no matter what style you are using. Years ago the only wood boxes that were used were oak half barrels or rough cedar, now you can also choose elegant rich-looking teak planters that will usually last for a long time. Redwood cedar is used quite often for some contemporary gardens because it is so durable and it has a natural resistance to rotting.

Wood planters that are painted can complement the exterior of your house and create a blended garden design. Plastic liners added to these planter boxes will lengthen the life of them. These plastic liners can be used not only to holding potting soil for your plants but will also hold smaller planted containers to extend the life of the larger box. Another big advantage to the wooden planters is you can combine features such as trellises and benches for attractive decorations or seating.

The best way to maintain outdoor garden boxes made of wood is to treat them with a non-toxic paint, stain, or waterproofing agent; line the inside of wood boxes that are susceptible to rotting with black plastic with holes made for drainage. You may want to reinforce the joints with a few extra rust-proof screws or nails.

Wood outdoor flower boxes come in a variety of woods and colors such as cedar, cypress, teak, and redwood. You can find them so they will compliment any of your outdoor furniture pieces; trellises are also available to match wooden flower boxes. Teak, cedar, and redwood are best if not painted as they are already resistant to rot. Planters constructed of wood will insulate the roots of the plants from the heat of the hot summer sun. If you place plastic liners with drainage holes inside these wood planter boxes the boxes will last longer.

Not only do outdoor planter boxes provide a functional place to plant different greenery, but they are also extremely appealing to the eye and would definitely enhance any space because of the many unique designs and materials that are available. If you live in the city with little room to garden, or you just want to add extra gardening space, planter boxes would be a perfect accessory. Your outdoor planter boxes can be used during spring, summer, and fall with flowers and vegetables. During the winter months you can place dwarf varieties of rosemary, cypress, spruce, and juniper.
