Landscape Design for the Backyard

There are numerous landscape design ideas for the backyard that you can gather from many different sources. You want your backyard landscape design to be unique to the way you live with one specific design or to have many unusual settings.

You should not make your backyard landscape designs a difficult job. There are many designs available for you to have a low maintenance backyard. There are options that will afford you a little privacy in any portion of your yard for meditation or reading a book. If you have a pool it is a good idea to install a fence around the swim areas or you may like to fence off an area for yard games. There are landscape decorations that you can install or plants to grow for bird watching or butterfly gardens. Your backyard landscape design does not have to be one design; it can be several to incorporate a multi-purpose yard.

You do not want your backyard landscaping ideas to resemble your neighbors. You want to make it a personal fun place that you do not have to worry about too much maintenance. You do not want to have to worry about the backyard landscaping while you are away on vacation. If you have a large backyard and you do not want a lot of work it would be better to plant only a small patch of lawn. Stones or pavers can be placed in the garden or around the yard to create a pathway to get to the different areas of the backyard. Herbs and flowers can be grown in containers or raised beds that will add color to any landscape. The containers can be moved around the backyard to suit their sunshine needs or create color to other areas of the yard.

If privacy is something that concerns you and your family the backyard landscaping ideas do not necessarily mean putting up a fence. The alternatives to fencing might include tall hedges, decorative trees, or lattice work that is covered with your favorite green or colorful vines. However, it is better to use regular fencing around the pool area for safety reasons; some types of fencing will also give you a little privacy while swimming and sunning. Regular fencing around the game or sports area is mainly for safety to those who are not participating and for the safety of the garden itself.

Natural fencing, such as bushes or hedges, can be grown in a circular fashion to create a meditation or reading area. In this area you can also plant flowers around the inner circle of bushes in order to promote relaxation. Backyard ornaments such as fountains, birdbaths, gazing balls or whatever you can find can be added to this area as well as any other area of the backyard. A nice comfortable bench can provide a meditation area within the circle. A lounge chair or small bistro table and chairs can give you a reading area.

If you live in the part of the country that does not get much rain during the summer you may want to enlarge your existing deck or patio to eliminate some of the grass that will need the water. Your backyard deck designs can give you areas for play, entertaining, reading, meditating, or having a family picnic.

There are so many different styles of patio, deck and backyard furniture available today that by placing a different seating arrangement in the numerous areas of your backyard can designate to the visitor what that area is used for. For instance, a lounge chair or bench can be used for reading or meditating; a small bistro table and chairs for playing cards; or a picnic table with benches or chairs for outdoor dining. These are just some backyard landscaping tips you can use for your backyard. Your ideas and budget will dictate how much or how little you add to the landscape design for the backyard.
