Home Gardeners and Some Supplies Needed for Growing Vegetables

Many home gardeners want to have a healthy diet and because of the recession now want to start growing their own vegetables. Since gardeners today do not want to put in a lot of extra time to vegetable gardening has brought back an interest in raised garden beds.

Raised garden beds provides the gardener with a productive use of space which enlarges their harvests, Using raised beds basically gets rid of soil compaction, the weeding becomes much easier, the soil will drain better, it puts everything at a level that is easier on our backs, and it devises a barrier to the pests such as slugs and snails. Your raised bed gardening supplies will be the same as you would use if you have a regular vegetable garden; the only difference being the handles will be much shorter because everything will be done on a higher level.

If the gardening tools you buy are a good quality they will last for quite some time; it is probably better to choose professional or heavy duty gardening implements. Below are five vegetable gardening tools that are a must:

  • The trowel is a hand held tool with a scooped shape that is used for digging small holes for placing plants. The trowel should have a steel blade and a sturdy wooden handle.
  • The pruner is also a tool that is hand held and is used for shaping plants and cutting off dead branches. When choosing your pruner it should feel comfortable in your hand and should be good quality.
  • A weeder should have a good sturdy handle, wheels that work easily, and get rid of the weeds in a hurry. For raised garden beds or container gardening a hand held gardening fork or weeder will work fine.
  • A spade is made for working the soil, will lie flat on the ground and is an excellent hole digger. When choosing a spade pick one according to your height and be sure it has a foot rest so you will be able to push the spade into the ground.
  • Foam kneeling pads are much more comfortable than a rag or a bit of cardboard for kneeling down to plant your vegetables or to do some weeding.

These are just some of the gardeners' supplies that are needed to grow a vegetable garden. Some of the other necessities are: a good garden hose that will reach to your garden; a soil test kit for testing the pH level of your soil; good quality seeds and/or starter plants; plant cages, ladders, and trellises for tomatoes and cucumbers; plant stakes for growing climbing vegetables; fertilizer; pesticides and fencing around your garden to keep animals out.

Some container gardening supplies would also include potting soil that is meant for growing vegetables, the regular hand held tools, fertilizer and of course the vegetables. There are some varieties of vegetables that were bred to be small and they are classified as miniature vegetables or dwarf vegetables and taste as good as the full sized vegetables.

If you have never planted a vegetable garden before you should realize that regular care is a must for successfully growing vegetables. Having good quality tools and supplies handy will make the job of home gardeners easy and productive. Growing a garden of vegetables should not be a chore you do not enjoy. Once you taste those delicious vegetables that you have grown will convince you it was all worth the effort.
