Creating Outdoor Spaces

Creating outdoor spaces continues to be a very popular home improvement project. As our economy slowly continues to recover we homeowners are looking for simple inexpensive ways to transform our homes' exteriors into inviting living and dining spaces. Many of these outdoor spaces can be enjoyed on a year round basis.

Many homeowners are very interested in adding outdoor living spaces but money and time may be holding us back from getting started. The good part of creating an appealing outdoor living area is that it does not need a lot of time or a large budget. We just need to concentrate on the basic elements and choosing the proper materials.

When we begin to create our outdoor spaces we need to start from the ground and go up. Instead of having someone come out and pour a concrete patio consider using composite interlocking decking tiles as an easy way to create a new patio or to enhance an existing one. These deck tiles can be used on any level, hard exterior surface such as the bare ground, concrete, asphalt, brick, or gravel. They just snap into place for a secure installation. All that is needed is to follow the simple instructions, there are no special tools needed. Composite deck tiles come in a multitude of colors, sizes, and patterns. They are easy to care for and provide a slip-resistant surface.

If you are concerned about providing shade for the hot summer days, an arbor or pergola can be added. Both of these items can use composite deck boards as non-structural elements to match the deck tiles that you installed for your patio.

Now that the flooring is complete and a structural item has been installed it is time to decorate the outdoor spaces. The most popular items will include dining furniture, seating, grills, and fire pits or fireplaces. Now you want to consider the size of your outdoor spaces and what you want to use them for. You may have a large area that you want to separate into a dining area and a lounging area. You may have small outdoor spaces in different sections of your backyard.  If you have a large area that you want to divide into dining and entertaining do a little research. You may find placing your grill and dining table and chairs in one area with potted trees or flowering vines on trellises to separate that area from the entertaining area. For your outdoor living room or entertaining room you may want a fire pit in the center of the seating area or an outdoor fireplace at one end with the seating area in front. It all depends on how you want to spend your leisure time and your budget.

To be sure that you get the maximum enjoyment out of your outdoor spaces during the evening hours you can install lighting fixtures, string or rope lighting, solar lighting, or post lighting. If you have more than one outdoor living space you may even want to install pathway lighting going from one outdoor space to another for ambience and safety.

By focusing on some of the basic features of outdoor spaces and choosing sturdy, easy-to-use products for construction, you can create affordable outdoor living rooms that you can enjoy for many years.
