Bring Spring Inside Your Home

Now that spring has finally arrived outside we also want to bring it inside our homes. During spring we have a lot more sunshine, the flowers and trees are now budding, and there are beautiful vivid colors around us. We want to bring all the newness to the inside of our homes.

Nature has already put us in into the spring mood and how better to brighten our indoor living than to bring in some of the season's plants and flowers. If you do not have the herbs growing in the garden as yet you can always get them started in the kitchen. You can start them by buying seeds or already potted seedlings. Bring out some of the pots that you have stored away in the basement or garage and give them a fresh coat of paint to brighten up your kitchen windowsill or dinning room table.

A great way to bring spring inside is to decorate the rooms that you spend the most time in, such as your kitchen or family room, with flowers. After you have restored some of your old vases or containers with bright colors, such as purple, green, or yellow, bring in some of those flowers to spruce up those rooms. You can liven up your family room and living room by painting the baseboards white or place colorful new pillows on your chairs or sofas. If you do not want to do any painting all you have to do is a little rearranging of furniture for a bright new look for your spring house.

Remember that garage sale or estate sale you went to last year? You found an old wicker chair that would come in handy some day. Well, now is the time to bring out that chair, give it a fresh coat of paint and a bright colorful cushion. But this time you want to bring it indoors and place it in your family room or bedroom to remind you of a new season. Flea markets are also great places to shop for new treasures. All you need to do is clean it, paint it, or stain it and you have a "new" spring interior decoration for your living room.

You decided that you want to have flowers and plants for your spring indoor decorations, so here is what needs to be done. Do not forget to use any existing old pots that you stored away for the winter. To mimic the activity of the worms and insects in your garden you want to use loose potting soil for indoor use, which is soil that is mixed with vermiculite, perlite and peat moss. This soil will not compact but stay loose even after a number of waterings.

Make sure your plants have an adequate amount of natural light. Some plants will require direct sunlight and need to be in a window that is south-facing and others would rather have only a few hours of indirect light. When they do not get the proper amount of light they will start looking frail and thin. You always want to rotate your plants to be sure the stems will grow straight rather than bending trying to reach the light.

It is best to keep the level of humidity above fifty percent with a humidifier or a water filled tray that is lined with rocks and you place the plants on top of the rocks. This method will give the plants the moisture they need. If the humidity falls below 50 percent most will suffer water loss through its leaves. You are not only bringing spring inside your home but the houseplants will improve the air quality that you are breathing. Enjoy the flowers and plants no matter how you bring spring inside your home.
