In order to make the winter months go by faster there are a number of gardeners who start their vegetable gardens indoors from seed and then there are those who prefer to maintain a few houseplants. The first thing that needs to be done is find the right location for an indoor garden. You want to select an area inside your home that receives plenty of sunlight and also has good ventilation. This area should also be easily accessible and convenient which means you will most likely be taking better care of the plants. You also need to make sure the seeds you purchase come from a reliable source; if the seeds are not good you will not have a good crop of vegetables. You also need to consider the soil you use. Because you do not have the same amount of sunlight during the winter months as you do during spring and summer, especially indoors, it is a good idea to invest in garden grow lights to help your plants blossom and produce a good crop.

In your indoor garden design you can make an outstanding display by choosing your houseplants and placing them the same way you would for an outdoor garden design. Group together the plants that have the same needs; do not have a shade loving plant next to a plant that needs full sun even though they look exquisite together. Just remember that your indoor plants are going to be much easier to move around than the plants in an outside garden particularly if they are not doing well in a certain spot.
Here are a couple of other ideas for displaying indoor plants. You can choose ones that have similar colors or details and display them in combinations with each other. One example would be a white and green variegated leaf ivy placed with a white flowering plant such as a peace lily. Plants that have contrasting colors will brighten up your home and create a lively atmosphere through the entire winter. For example, an orange-striped or yellow striped croton with an African violet with beautiful purple flowers.
Another good idea is to stage your plants to create a dimensional effect. One way to achieve this is to use plant stands, tables and decorative ladders for height variations instead of having all the plants sitting on a windowsill.
Decorative containers that have different depths and widths will also work well. You can build an active display by placing trailing plants, upright plants and mounding plants together. You can also make a strong focal point by placing a large plant such as a ficus or the architectural design of the spiky agave standing along in an open area or in a corner. Your indoor plants or houseplants also need that special attention. The plants that need sun should be placed in south facing windows or place grow lights directly above them for even growth; your shade loving plants will still need light but do not require as much and can survive in other directional windows. Arrange your houseplants in various heights to give off a pleasant appearance; using junipers and palms are very easy to maintain and at the same time add foliage to your home interior. Indoor plants that are vine plants are quite easy to grow and will create a look of fullness to any indoor garden design.
