Indoor vegetable gardening may sound crazy to those with decent sized backyards; but some apartment or condo dwellers do not have outside areas to grow a vegetable garden. As long as you follow a few guidelines an indoor vegetable garden can be very successful for a long time. As long as you enjoy the taste of fresh vegetables and herbs you will also enjoy being able to pick the ones you want exactly when you need them because they will be right at your fingertips.

One thing you need do is choose the right vegetables. All plants have different requirements and the best indoor vegetable plants are going to need light and room to grow. The plants that bear fruit require a lot of sunlight but the salad greens such as lettuce, spinach, chard, and miniature cabbages do not require as much light and will do very well indoors. The containers you choose need to be large enough for the root systems of the mature vegetable plants. Decide which vegetables you want to grow indoors and determine the amount of space that is needed for the roots and then pick the containers that will work best.

Now you need to find the right place to grow the vegetables and herbs. You need to remember that good lighting is a must if you want your indoor vegetable garden to be successful. A south facing window is a good place to start or any other area that has five hours or more continuous sunlight. Besides the natural light or if you do not receive very much sunlight you can use supplemental lighting or grow lights for growing plants. You also want to keep your vegetables out of people and pet traffic; vegetables have a tendency to bruise easy so you want to minimize that possibility. It is also a good idea to have your gardening tools handy for a quick and easy clean up.

The best type of environment for growing most plants is high humidity and moderate temperatures; indoor vegetable plants very often suffer distress from low humidity but this can remedied. Plants and vegetables that are growing in containers need to be watered more often because they dry out quicker. However, you need to be careful not to over-water them because if they become waterlogged it could cause root rot. When you place small pebbles or gravel in the drainage tray under the container it will provide excellent drainage and will also supply humidity to the plant during evaporation of the water. You can try grouping the plants together to achieve extra humidity. You can also control the indoor temperature by closing the drapes for more shade but be sure they are still provided with enough sunlight.

Good potting soil is very important for a successful vegetable garden. Potting soil that contains the needed nutrients and drains well is basically all that is needed for proper growth and development. This type of potting soil and organic potting soil can be purchased at the local home and garden center. If you need to add nutrients to the soil, do so with care and follow the instructions carefully; you need to remember these are container plants and too much fertilizer can cause problems.

Make sure you give your vegetable plants exposure to sunlight for no less than six hours a day. Just remember to give them supplemental lighting if you cannot provide enough sunlight. Also be sure the exposure is not intense or it could dry out the vegetables. Do not be afraid to grow vegetables indoors, it can be very rewarding for you and your family. Let your entire family help care for the container vegetables by showing them when to water and when to harvest. Your children may end up eating more vegetables once they are able to care for them and pick their own radishes or carrots for dinner. As you can see growing plants indoors can be very rewarding, all you need do is follow these simple guidelines and you could have the best indoor vegetable plants.
