A Solar Bird Bath for the Garden

Gardener's Garden Supplies

A solar bird bath for the garden is one way to attract some fine feathered friends to your area. The solar bird bath can be considered as solar for some of the options they can incorporate. These options are: lighting for nighttime use; an outdoor water fountain for the sounds of splashing water that is always moving; and a heater installed into the bird bath to help prevent the water from freezing in colder climate winters.

Many of the solar bird baths are self-contained which means they already have the solar panels integrated into the unit. Other bird baths have solar panels that are separate from the bath itself but are attached by a wire. The self-contained solar bird bath will need to be placed in the sun in order for the panel to absorb the energy of the sun. The other units can be placed anywhere you want including the shade as long as the solar panel itself is in the sun and receives sunlight.

The solar bird bath is becoming very popular these days. These bird baths will only operate when the panel is directly hit by the sun; they will not run on rainy days or overcast days. But sometimes there can be the option of installing small battery packs into the panels. This will allow the bird bath to be operated during cloudy days and in the evening. The solar bird bath pump is submerged under water to avoid damage, and the bird bath needs to be free of debris for proper usage. In cold winter climates the bird bath pump needs to be protected from freezing.

Some of the benefits of the solar bird bath are:

  • Some are self contained and do not require installation.
  • There is no energy cost due to the fact they are powered by the sun.
  • They can easily be moved around.
  • There are no operating costs.

A solar water fountain that is a self-contained unit or not is also perfect for a bird bath because they make the sound of water splashing or moving which will attract a number of species of wild birds. Water is just as important to wild birds as their shelter and food when you want to attract them to your garden or patio. There are a number of solar powered bird baths on the market and many of them are a blend between a solar fountain and a bird bath. By keeping the water moving not only attracts wild birds but prevents the water from becoming stagnant. Stagnant water will attract mosquitoes to a perfect spot for them to lay their eggs.

A solar heated bird bath will keep the water just warm enough from completely freezing. It is most important for the birds to keep their feathers clean even in the winter and the heated solar bird bath would be the best thing for them. So, if you live in an area that freezes during the winter months you might want to consider purchasing a heated solar bird bath.

A solar bird bath will provide everyone with a relaxing outdoor adventure. Watching the birds bathe or just come for a drink is a charming way for enjoying the chirping music of the birds in the garden or patio.
