Rope Lights for Christmas Landscaping

Rope lights are an excellent way to spruce up your landscaping during the Christmas holidays. Using rope lights is an innovative way to decorate during any holidays. I believe they are a bit safer than the traditional string lights in that the lights itself are enclosed inside a flexible tube and are basically protected from the elements.

Because rope lights are flexible you can follow the architecture of your house and become very creative by making your own design on your landscaping. You can let you imagination run wild if you want. You can run them along the ground next to your walkway or driveway for easy access to your front door or better yet, elevate them on stakes. You can also use them indoors for illuminating a Christmas village that you have set up, light up dark corners of a room and you can decorate your Christmas tree.

Winter Flowers - The Christmas Rose

There are not many winter flowers but one comes to mind and that is the Christmas rose or Lenten rose as it is sometimes called. Winter flowers in very cold climates are a rare sight; when we do see them we enjoy them very much.

These winter flowers, the Christmas rose, have a legend behind it. It speaks of a poor young shepherd girl, by the name of Madelon, who wished to worship the new infant Christ Child. Once she saw all the gold, frankincense, and myrrh brought by the Wise Men, she became discouraged for she had no gift to bring.

Christmas Flowers - History of the Christmas Cactus

Christmas flowers come in various forms such as the poinsettia, holly, Christmas rose, ivy, mistletoe, amaryllis, and of course the Christmas cactus. These are all beautiful Christmas flowers but I want to touch on the history of the Christmas cactus in this article.

The Christmas cactus is a common sight in many homes during the holidays throughout Europe and North America. The history and origin of the Schlumbergera Christmas cactus however, is of more tropical and exotic climates. The cactus received its name because it would always bloom during the Christmas season.

Wooden Porch Swings for Fun and Relaxation

Wooden porch swings, I know, but it is still winter. Believe it or not wooden porch swings will be hung back up and be put to good use sooner than we think. I can remember growing up in the mid-west years ago that every other house that had a front porch also had a porch swing. Those that did not have one had some sort of lounge chair for relaxing in the evening.

A front porch swing can be a very valuable item for your home. Have you ever walked by a house with a wooden porch swing and seen everyone sitting on the swing having a good time? The swing just screams out fun and relaxation. Swings can be a lot of fun, but now days there are too many newer homes that do not have front porches to place those porch swings. We can place a wooden porch swing just about anywhere. The hanging type will need a front porch roof, a very sturdy patio cover, or a couple of strong branches from a couple of side by side trees to attach the chains.

Outdoor String Lighting

Outdoor string lighting brings something to the air that just make you want to smile particularly at Christmas time when we string the lights around inside and outside of our homes. Putting outdoor string lighting around the inside of our homes, and yards are available in clear, solid color, and multicolor; they also can include the option of staying lit constantly, twinkling, or in a unique chase pattern.

Outdoor string lighting is one way to create sparkle, charm or gives a festive atmosphere for any patio or holiday gathering. They are not to be confused with the traditional Christmas lights; these globe lights or string lights offer homeowners a new way of festive lighting. Outdoor patio string lights are also an excellent way to light arbors, playhouses, pool areas, and for any nighttime enjoyment. Just picture how nice it will be entertaining your friends in your backyard with string lights in the trees, on the patio or on the deck.

Winter Garden Storage of Vegetables

Your winter garden storage of vegetables, those that are grown underground and the harvesting of them are now. Winter garden storage, after harvesting vegetables, starts with a washing but it needs to done gently so they do not get bruised or the skin gets damaged. After washing make sure they dry thoroughly before storing. Carrots, onions, potatoes, turnips, and winter squash generally will be able to handle a mild frost but should be harvested before a heavy frost sets in.

The winter garden storage of carrots and turnips can be together. You want to trim the tops of these root crops to about one inch and then layer them in vegetable storage containers of moist sand. Store the container in a cool humid place that is between 32 and 40 degrees for 4-5 months. If the temperature gets to 45 degrees they will begin to sprout and become very woody. Once the sand starts drying out, sprinkle the container with a little water to keep them moist. This moisture will prevent them from shriveling. Beets, rutabagas and winter radishes can all be stored in the same manner. When it is time to start using these vegetables be sure to wash them in warm water.

The Health Benefits of Carrots

The health benefits of carrots are not just for your eyesight. The lowering of cholesterol, prevention of cancer and to help to avoid heart attacks are more of the health benefits of carrots.

What are the health benefits of carrots that help improve our eyesight? Beta-carotene is the answer to that question. Beta-carotene not only gave the carrot its name and orange color but it also turns into vitamin A while it is in the body which will help to improve our vision. Vitamin A forms a purple pigment that is called rhodopsin; this is what our eyes need in order to see in dim light. If we do not get enough vitamin A it could lead to night blindness.

Indoor Gardening

Indoor gardening probably got started back in the Victorian era. Indoor gardening at that time probably only consisted of a few different plants. A couple of which was the palms and hibiscus. The families that could afford to purchase these plants would fill their entertaining rooms with these beautiful plants. After that period of time people did not want to keep live indoor plants in their homes and so the tradition faded away.

Indoor gardening was reintroduced again during the 1970's but the basic houseplants were foliage plants such as ferns, grape ivy, and spider plants. Today there is a larger selection of plants and many of them are flowering houseplants which include the orchid, geranium, gardenia, begonia, African violet, and bougainvillea. These indoor plants not only bring in color but also pleasant aromas into our homes.
